To obtain a private security licence, it is pre-requisite to complete your certificate II in Security operations training(CPP20212). In general, you can apply for a private security licence after successfully completing the security operations course. Moreover, the security licensing process involves 3 main steps to create an e-services account, filling out the online application and send all the documents by mail (to the LRD office for approval). Security Licensing Process in Victoria

The Security licensing process in Victoria involves 3 main steps:

  • First: Create an eService account on LRD website (refer to the eligibility criteria in the Victoria Police website)
  • Second: Fill out the application (keep the documents ready when you fill out the application)
  • Third: Send the application with the relevant documents to LRD via mail for approval. (Processing takes a maximum of 28 days)

Steps Involved to obtain a Private Security Licence in Victoria:

The steps involved in the process to get a Victorian Security Licence are as follows:

1. Fingerprints and National Check

The first step in the security licensing process is to get your fingerprints and National Checks done. At GSTA, we get the fingerprints and national checks done for all the students during the induction process before enrolment into the course. Finally, once the checks are completed, you are enrolled in the Certificate II in Security Operations course.

2. Take a Certificate II in Security Operations Course

The second step is enrollment into the security operations course. In general, the Certificate II in Security Operations course offers the necessary skills and knowledge to work in the security industry. In this course, you learn about the roles and responsibilities of the security guard along with the requisite skills to combat real-life situations. Furthermore, the duration of the security course is 17 days (night classes available). However, you need to successfully complete your Certificate II in Security Operations course prior to applying for a Security Licence.

3. Create an eServices account on the Victoria Police website

The third step is to create an eServices account on the LRD website. Additionally, you will be able to do the following using your eServices account :

  • Complete your application form
  • Track the progress of your application
  • Also, get notifications from the Licensing and Regulation Division if you need to provide more information.

Most importantly, you need to meet the eligibility requirements to register for a Victoria Police Licensing e-Services account.

In general, to make the application process easier have these 3 things accessible:

  • A secure email address for activating your eServices account (and receiving notifications about your application);
  • Personal information including details of ID documents; and
  • Finally, details of relevant training including statements of results.

4. Fill out the application

The fourth step is to fill out your details in the application form. Print the application form and fill out your details on the form.

5. Submission of Application

Finally, the last step involves the submission of all the documents for approval to get the security licence. Then, send the printed application along with all supporting documents to the Licensing and Regulation Division(LRD) for the approval via post to GPO Box 2807, Melbourne 3001.

Application Processing Time

After the application is submitted to the LRD for approval, the application is processed once received. The LRD generally processes all applications within 28 days.

Every state in Australia has its own rules and regulations when it comes to a Private Security Licence. In particular, the security licensing process and its requirements in each state are different. Licensing requirements in Victoria

The Victorian Police (LRD) regulates the security licensing process in Victoria and you can get all the details about the requirements on their website.
The Victorian Police website shows that individuals who wish to apply for a private security licence as an Unarmed Guard and/or a Crowd Controller must complete the units as mentioned under the course structure.

To obtain a Victorian Security Licence, you need to complete an additional 7 units apart from the main 12 units. The course structure highlights the details of the main and additional units. You need to complete 19 units in total to get a Victorian Security Licence.
